West Indies Call Up Uncapped All-Rounder Johann Layne for ODI Series Against Pakistan

In a significant move, West Indies have named uncapped all-rounder Johann Layne as a replacement for Matthew Forde, who has been ruled out of the ODI squad due to a dislocated left shoulder sustained during training. Forde's injury occurred while attempting a diving catch in practice, as confirmed by Cricket West Indies.

Layne, a 21-year-old bowling all-rounder from Barbados, has impressed with his performances for West Indies A and will make his debut in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Pakistan. The series, which starts on August 8, 2025, will be held entirely in Trinidad.

With Forde's absence, West Indies look to strengthen their team ahead of the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. Head coach Darren Sammy has emphasized the importance of this series, stating that while qualification is the immediate goal, maintaining a winning mentality and team cohesion is essential for long-term success.

Pakistan currently ranks higher than West Indies in the ICC ODI rankings. Playing against higher-ranked opposition like Pakistan offers crucial opportunities to earn valuable ranking points. Head coach Sammy acknowledged the significance of the Pakistan challenge, highlighting the importance of collecting ranking points in the lead-up to the next World Cup cycle.

Shai Hope will captain the West Indies ODI squad for the series against Pakistan. The squad includes Jediah Blades, Keacy Carty, Justin Greaves, Amir Jangoo, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Layne, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Sherfane Rutherford, Jayden Seales, and Romario Shepherd.

The upcoming matches against Pakistan provide opportunities to improve West Indies' standing ahead of the World Cup. The first ODI is scheduled for August 8, followed by matches on August 10 and 12. The West Indies ODI squad's selection is part of the team's build-up to the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

Former cricketer Ian Bishop has praised Layne's pace bowling, and the young all-rounder has impressed with his performances for West Indies A against South Africa A recently. This replacement comes as West Indies look to bolster their team for the challenging series against Pakistan.
