Germany's attempts to retrieve Dahlmeier's remains from Pakistan will not yield success - Pakistan Denies Retrieval of Dahlmeier's Remains
In a tragic turn of events, former German biathlete Laura Dahlmeier lost her life in an avalanche while mountaineering in the Pakistani Karakorum range on Monday, July 28, 2025. The accident occurred at around 5,700 meters altitude on the Laila Peak.
The rescue operation, initially launched, was hindered by persistent adverse weather conditions and dangerous terrain, making it impossible for rescue helicopters to reach the site. As a result, the recovery efforts were called off on the evening of the same day, respecting Dahlmeier's written wish that her remains remain on the mountain rather than endangering others.
Dahlmeier's climbing partner, Marina Krauss, described the accident, stating that they abandoned their attempt to reach the summit due to conditions and were struck by a rockfall during their descent. The partner was unharmed in the incident.
Pakistani authorities announced they will not attempt to recover Dahlmeier's body, honoring her wish. The athlete's management also stated that they will not attempt to recover the body in coordination with the Alpine Club of Pakistan due to current dangers at the Laila Peak.
The recovery operation was temporarily suspended on Tuesday evening and resumed the next morning, with four experienced climbers and two porters on the mountain in two teams to retrieve Dahlmeier. However, strong winds and poor visibility continued to pose challenges, leading to the suspension of the operation once more.
Biathlon legend Magdalena Neuner paid tribute to Dahlmeier, describing her as a great role model and pioneer. German mountaineer Thomas Huber is part of one of the teams working on the recovery mission.
The family of Laura Dahlmeier has mourned her death, expressing gratitude to the rescuers and describing her as an incredible person who enriched their lives. A photo shows Dahlmeier with one of her climbing groups at Skardu International Airport a few weeks before the fatal accident on the mountain.
