Pakistan Disputes Fresh Attack Allegations - India Stands Firm on Claims - Pakistan Denies Fresh Indian Allegations of Aggression

Sizzling tensions between India and Pakistan continue to simmer. Last night, India claimed that Pakistan had launched air raids on regions under India's control in Kashmir and the border of Punjab. Pakistan, however, vehemently denied these allegations—unverified at this moment.

The Indian Defense Ministry stated that Pakistani forces had launched rocket and drone attacks on Kashmir and a military station near the Punjab border. They declared the offensive neutralized, no casualties reported.

Pakistan Puts Brakes on False Accusations

Pakistan countered these accusations with a firm rejection, citing the baseless and reckless claims being hurled by Indian media. Pakistan's Information Minister, Ataullah Tarar, echoed this stance, denying any attacks in Indian-controlled Kashmir or beyond the international border. Both nations warily claim ownership over Kashmir.

This recent escalation between these two nuclear powers appears to have been sparked by a devastating terrorist attack on April 22 in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 Indians and several tourists dead. India has leveled accusations against Pakistan, with the latter denying any involvement and calling for an independent inquiry.

Buzzing Ears: Loud Booms in Jammu

Indian media reported that Thursday night's explosions sent panic rippling through the population in Jammu and Kashmir. Air raid sirens blared, and the daily hustle turned chaotic. According to "India Today," a drone targeted Jammu's airport, where an air force facility lies. India reportedly activated its air defense, suspecting a bombardment, grenade fire, or rocket strikes. Former police chief of the Union Territory, Shesh Paul Vaid, wrote on the platform X about a complete power outage in the border area of the territory. India's air defense is said to have intercepted at least eight enemy rockets.

India Strikes a Blow Against Pakistan's Air Defense

Earlier in the week, India declared it had struck multiple air defense systems in various locations within Pakistan. They claimed to have destroyed one in Lahore. The military argued it was taking defensive action to deter Pakistan's attempts to hit military targets in northern and western India, including 15 cities, with drones and rockets. Pakistan countered by saying it shot down 25 Indian drones since the previous night.

Nervous Glances from the World

Internationally, there is growing unease about further deterioration of the crisis on the Indian subcontinent. Germany and the 26 EU member states have urgently called on the nuclear-armed rivals, Pakistan and India, to de-escalate without delay.

Heavy Casualties on Both Sides

According to Pakistan's military, around 87 people were killed and 146 injured following India's attacks. Moreover, one person was killed and five injured, including four soldiers, from debris resulting from the shootdown of Indian drones the previous night. India announced 16 civilians, including five children, were killed due to Pakistani artillery fire near the border, along with the death of one soldier.

Iran's Foreign Minister Continues Mediation Talks

With the recent turmoil, Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, has been carrying on mediation talks in New Delhi after his visit to Pakistan. He met with his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, as reported by Iranian state media. According to Araghchi, discussions centered on economics, with both nations signing three memorandums of understanding. "Our region needs peace," added Araghchi, noting Iran also aims to mediate in the ongoing conflict.

digging deeper:

The recent escalation between India and Pakistan stems from a series of violent events and military confrontations primarily focusing on Kashmir, a long-disputed territory between the two nuclear neighbors.

Timeline and Key Events:

  • April 22, 2025: The conflict initiated after a deadly terrorist attack in the Baisaran Valley of Jammu and Kashmir, killing 25 Indians and one Nepalese citizen, marking the deadliest such attack since 2008. The Resistance Front (TRF), a militant group linked to the Kashmir resistance movement, claimed responsibility. India accused Pakistan of supporting the attackers, while Pakistan denied any involvement and suggested the attack could be a false flag.
  • April 23-24, 2025: Following the attack, a standoff emerged along the LoC between India and Pakistan, with skirmishes reported. India retaliated by downgrading diplomatic ties, suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, closing border crossings, and halting visa and trade agreements with Pakistan. Pakistan reciprocated with its own restrictions, closing its airspace to Indian flights and halting bilateral trade.
  • April 28, 2025: Pakistan's Defense Ministry warned of an imminent Indian military attack, preparing reinforcements. Meanwhile, India intensified its crackdown in Kashmir, detaining over 1,500 Kashmiris and demolishing homes of suspected militants.
  • May 7, 2025: The conflict escalated militarily when Indian paramilitary forces established a perimeter in Wuyan, Indian-administered Kashmir, leading to exchanges of gunfire and aerial assaults. India launched missile strikes targeting Pakistani territory, prompting Pakistan to retaliate by shooting down Indian aircraft.
  • May 10, 2025: A ceasefire was agreed upon, beginning at 16:30 PKT/17:00 IST. However, both sides have since accused each other of violations.

Root Causes:

  • Immediate cause: The devastating terrorist attack on tourists in Kashmir, attributed to militant groups opposed to Indian control of the region and accused Pakistani support.
  • Underlying issue: The long-standing Kashmir dispute, with historic claims by both nations since partition in 1947, leading to multiple wars between India and Pakistan.
  • Broader conflict: Indo-Pakistani tensions, with cross-border militant attacks, disputed territorial claims, and national security concerns from both sides.
  • The Parliament has passed a resolution on the Commission communication on the European Union's role in the fight against terrorism, highlighting the need for increased cooperation in addressing the growing threat of terrorism in war-and-conflicts zones, such as those in South Asia like Kashmir.
  • In the midst of the ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan, the general news is dominated by reports of the escalating conflict, particularly the frequent car-accidents occurring on both sides due to hurried troop movements and heightened security measures.
  • Amidst the recent escalation between India and Pakistan, discussions on crime-and-justice issues, including the proper investigation of terror attacks, have become increasingly relevant, as both nations have accused each other of supporting militant groups responsible for terrorist activities in Kashmir.
