Pakistan cricket icon Shahid Afridi's remarks dubbing Rahul Gandhi as a "darling" have sparked a political uproar in India.

In a surprising turn of events, former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi has praised Indian politician Rahul Gandhi during a Pakistani news channel discussion. Afridi commended Gandhi for his positive mindset and belief in dialogue.

This praise, however, has not gone unnoticed in Indian political circles. Shehzad Poonawalla, a BJP spokesperson, quickly took to social media to criticise Afridi, labelling him a "terror apologist" and "India hater" for praising Gandhi.

The discussion comes amidst a controversy over the Indian cricket team's refusal to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts during a recent Asia Cup match in Dubai. The incident has further fuelled political tensions between the two nations.

Union minister Kiren Rijiju directly attacked Gandhi, stating that he has been the "darling" of Pakistan. The BJP, following this, accused Gandhi of being a "darling" of Pakistan due to Afridi's praise.

The Congress party, however, has hit back at these accusations. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate shared a picture of Afridi with BJP leader Anurag Thakur, questioning the ruling party's stance.

Afridi did not stop at praising Gandhi's mindset. He also compared the Indian government to Israel and suggested that India is trying to become another. Furthermore, he criticised the Indian government for playing the religion and Muslim-Hindu card to stay in power.

The Asia Cup match between India and Pakistan took place in Dubai on Sunday, with India thrashing Pakistan in a one-sided clash. Despite the political tension, the sporting rivalry between the two nations remains intense.

Previously, the Congress and its allies had criticised the BJP over India's decision to play against Pakistan in the Asia Cup. The political debate surrounding this issue is likely to continue in the coming days.
