Brandenburg Gate Paint Protest Charges Unveiled
After approximately three months, prosecutors in Berlin indicted six individuals from the Last Generation climate activist group for their role in the paint attack on the iconic Brandenburg Gate. The six individuals, comprising of three men and three women, are accused of joint property damage and resisting law enforcement officers.
Suspects from diverse regional backgrounds
Involved in the September 17 spray paint incident, were individuals from Hamburg (27), Berlin (34), Leipzig (27), Ravensburg (26), Stuttgart (31), and Prague (51). These individuals are alleged to have adorned the landmark with non-water-soluble paint, causing nearly 115,000 euros in damage.
Suspects refused to yield to officers
According to the indictment, two of the female suspects utilized a pre-prepared fire extinguisher to spread the paint on a pillar or on the ground between the pillars. Meanwhile, three other activists attempted to reach the landmark, selecting a lifting platform as their mode of transportation, with the aim of hanging a banner as well as spreading more paint.
Their attempt was halted by law enforcement officers striving to safeguard property and maintain order. The indictment indicates that the officers' intervention resulted in a precarious situation, as the activists refused to comply, and the officers had to deploy themselves from the outside of the vehicle, hanging perilously from a height of more than two meters to reach the lifting platform's control panel.
Ongoing investigations and eventual trial
As of now, a trial date has yet to be established in the Tiergarten district court, awaiting admission of the charges. The court scrutinizes over 14 legal cases initiated as a result of the protests, with the confiscation complaints impeding the progress in six proceedings.
