Pablo Gómez suggests that mistakes can be rectified and that judicial elections can be re-examined.
The upcoming 2027 intermediate elections in the country are set to be a complex affair, with a large number of positions at stake. This was mentioned by Pablo Gómez, a key figure in the Presidential Commission for Electoral Reform.
Gómez also emphasized the importance of administrative and jurisdictional organs maintaining their independence from political parties in electoral matters. He highlighted the need to review lessons and "mistakes" of the previous judicial election to correct them for the next electoral process. However, he acknowledged that not all points can be guaranteed to be corrected as many depend on administrative practices.
The Electoral Tribunal has been active during the current judicial election, issuing important sentences, some without precedents. Monica Soto, President Magistrate of the TEPJF, highlighted the need to analyze deadlines for appeals and the judicial election itself. She expressed that these challenges will provide an opportunity for consideration by the commission for electoral reform and legislative organs.
In a meeting with magistrates of the Superior Chamber of the Electoral Tribunal, they spoke about improving the probatory system in electoral matters. Soto also expressed the need to review the requirements derived from the evaluation committees when determining the eligibility of candidacies.
The Presidential Commission for Electoral Reform is open to discussing the date of the second half of the judicial election, which would be concurrent with the intermediate election to renew the Chamber of Deputies and 17 governorships in 2027. No definite decisions have been made regarding the date of the second half of the judicial election.
The procedure for electing judges is complex due to the large number of positions that have to be elected at the same time. This complexity is further compounded by the need to administer both the 2027 intermediate elections and the Judicial Power process concurrently.
On a separate note, the organization responsible for deciding the extension of the stopover and the change of route for the plane transporting Hernán Bermúdez "El Abuelo" was revealed to be the Colombian National Army. No further information was provided about the airplane or the individual in question.
Monica Soto and Pablo Gómez's discussions underscore the importance of a smooth and fair electoral process in the coming years. Their emphasis on reviewing and improving processes, as well as maintaining independence in administrative and jurisdictional organs, will likely play a significant role in shaping the electoral landscape of the country.
