Miami Dolphins Seek Turnaround Under Head Coach Mike McDaniel

The Miami Dolphins are off to a rocky start in the 2025 NFL season, with a 1-1 record after two games. The offense, in particular, has struggled to find its rhythm, a far cry from the team's impressive performance in the 2023 season when they led the NFL in total offense with 401.3 yards per game.

Despite the current struggles, the team's head coach, Mike McDaniel, remains at the helm. McDaniel, who joined the Dolphins in 2022, worked as the 49ers' run game coordinator and then spent one year as Kyle Shanahan's offensive coordinator. He led the team to a 9-8 record in his first season, snapping a five-year playoff drought.

However, the Dolphins have not fared well against teams with a winning record. In their last 14 games against such teams, they have been outscored by a total of 184 points. This trend continued into the 2023 playoffs, where they lost in the wild-card round to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Stephen Ross, the owner of the Miami Dolphins, has shown faith in McDaniel, extending his contract through 2028. Ross believes in McDaniel's ability to turn the team's performance around and has given him the opportunity to do so.

The defense, too, has struggled this season, with both the run and pass proving difficult to stop. This was evident in the Dolphins' opening game against the New England Patriots, where they were out-scored by a total of 31 points.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa missed a total of six games in the 2024 season, which may have contributed to the team's inconsistent performance. With Tagovailoa back in the lineup, McDaniel will aim to get his team back on track this Thursday night against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.

If the team's performance continues to falter, and if fans stop showing up to games and McDaniel loses the locker room, Ross might reconsider his decision. For now, however, the focus remains on turning things around and making a strong push for the playoffs.

The Dolphins finished the 2024 season with an 8-9 record, missing out on the playoffs. They will look to improve upon that record in the remaining games of the 2025 season and beyond.
