Owned Old Firearm: Polish Model Vis 35 Radom
The Vis 35 Radom pistol, a symbol of Polish firearms engineering, has a rich history that spans over eight decades. Originating in the 1930s, this handgun was developed by Piotr Wilniewczyc and Jan Skrzypiński at the FB Radom plant in Poland.
In the pre-World War II era, Poland sought a new military sidearm, and the Vis 35 Radom pistol was born. Sharing similarities with the U.S. Model of 1911 pistol, particularly in slide and frame shape, the Vis 35 quickly became a contender.
Before the German invasion in 1939, the Vis 35 was already in production. However, by the end of World War II, the pistols were roughly finished and lacked several components found on early pre-war models. The Wehrmacht took over the Radom factory in 1939 and resumed production of Vis 35 pistols for its own use.
Following World War II, Poland fell under the control of the Soviet Union, which ended Vis 35 production for decades. It wasn't until the early 1990s that there were some limited runs of Vis 35 production, and by 1997, they had really started reintroducing it. After the fall of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, Poland regained its ability to control what its domestic military factory produced, and it decided to start producing Vis 35s again for the world market.
The Vis 35 Radom pistol is chambered in 9mm Parabellum and features a hammer drop, as well as controls for hold open and takedown. By 2017, Poland was regularly producing Vis 35s for the world market. In fact, by this year, Vis 35 production was solely for the world market in Poland.
The Vis 35 has had prolonged production and use, even after World War II, making it one of those pre-war handgun designs that has seen some incredible longevity. Today, it is considered one of the best handguns from the pre-World War II era, a testament to the skill and ingenuity of its designers and the resilience of this iconic firearm.
