Oviedo claims his first major-league victory since 2023, as the Pirates clinch a 2-1 win against the Blue Jays, securing the series victory.
Pirates Take Three-Game Series Against Blue Jays
In an unexpected turn of events, the Pittsburgh Pirates have managed to pull off a series victory against the Toronto Blue Jays, currently leading the AL East. The Pirates, who are struggling at the bottom of the NL Central, secured a 2-1 win in the final game of the series.
The game began with a promising start for the Blue Jays, as George Springer hit a home run in the first inning, giving them an early lead. However, the Pirates responded swiftly. In the bottom of the first, Spencer Horwitz walked, and Bryan Reynolds followed with a two-out double. Tommy Pham then plated a pair with a double, tying the game.
Johan Oviedo, the Pirates' starting pitcher, earned his first major-league win since 2023 in this game. In his second start since his Tommy John surgery, Oviedo demonstrated his resilience, striking out six batters, allowing two hits, one run, and had a walk in five innings.
On the other side, the Blue Jays' starter Chris Bassitt pitched 5 2/3 innings, recording a season-high 10 strikeouts and two walks. However, he was tagged for two runs and six hits.
The Blue Jays had opportunities to take the lead, with Bo Bichette leading off the fourth inning with a double. However, Oviedo kept Bichette at second base by striking out Alejandro Kirk. Daulton Varsho followed with a flyout, and the Blue Jays were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
The Pirates secured the win in the ninth inning, with Dennis Santana striking out one batter for his ninth save.
The upcoming games are set to be significant for both teams. Shane Bieber, who was traded by Cleveland to Toronto on July 31, is set to make his season debut on Friday. Bieber, who has not pitched in the majors since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2024, will open a three-game series at Miami on Friday. His return is seen as a significant boost to the Blue Jays' rotation, as he demonstrated his potential impact with a strong debut performance on August 22, 2025, where he pitched six innings with nine strikeouts.
Meanwhile, the Pirates will play a three-game home set against the Colorado Rockies on Friday. The team will look to build on their recent success and continue their upward trajectory in the NL Central.
