Giro d'Italia: Simon Yates Clinches Overall Victory in Spectacular Fashion

Simon Yates of Team Visma-Lease a Bike has secured an overall victory in the 108th Giro d'Italia, delivering a spellbinding performance on the iconic Colle delle Finestre. The decisive stage, spanning 205 kilometers from Verrès to Sestrière, saw Yates overtake a deficit of over a minute and a half in the general classification at the beginning of the day.

The British rider set off an impressive climbing display about 39 kilometers from the finish on the legendary gravel climb. By the day's end, Yates had crossed the finish line in third place, but his lead was enough to secure the overall title.

In the snow-capped Cottian Alps, Yates demonstrated his unparalleled climbing prowess, leaving his rivals, Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) and Isaac del Toro (UAE Emirates-XRG) trailing behind at the summit of the Finestre. Carapaz, a former champion, and del Toro, who had worn the pink leader's jersey for 10 or 11 stages, could not keep up with Yates' relentless pace.

On the final stage on Sunday, starting and finishing in Rome, Yates will not be targeted due to his race-winning lead. Yates, who claimed victory in the 2018 Vuelta, now awaits his second Grand Tour win. In the overall standings, the 32-year-old is clearly ahead of del Toro (+3:56) and Carapaz (+4:43). The penultimate stage's victory went to Australian Chris Harper (Jayco AlUla) as a solo rider, with Yates finishing third behind Alessandro Verre (Arkea-B&B Hotels) (+1:49) and Harper (+1:57).

Carapaz attempted the first attack on the 18.2-kilometer-long and 9.2% steep Finestre. However, the decisive moves happened earlier in the climb than anticipated. Del Toro followed Carapaz, and Yates soon caught up to the duo. A series of unsuccessful attacks ensued, but on the fourth attempt, Yates finally created a significant gap.

This Giro d'Italia will end on Sunday with a symbolic ride through Rome, passing the Vatican, and blessing the riders at St. Peter's Basilica. Pope Leo XIV will welcome the participants. The late Pope Francis made this extraordinary route possible. The ride starts at the Circus Maximus and leads over cobblestones past numerous historical sites.
