Overnight, Zverev completes his work at the Cincinnati Open tournament
In the exciting world of tennis, the Cincinnati Masters 2022 has been a tournament to remember. The event saw a strong defending run from defending champion Jannik Sinner, a surprising breakthrough by Terence Atmane, and a maiden fourth-round victory for Magda Linette.
On the men's side, Sinner, the top seed, defeated Adrien Mannarino 6-4, 7-6 to reach the quarterfinals. He later crushed Felix Auger-Aliassime to advance to the semifinals. Magda Linette, the 2021 Cincinnati winner Zverev's third-round opponent, led 6-4, 5-4 in a game but did not complete it due to resuming later. The match was halted the night before and resumed. Linette, who had never won a set from Jessica Pegula before this match, broke Pegula for 3-5 in the third set to take the lead. The match was eventually won by Linette with a service winner, marking her first victory in the fourth round at Cincinnati.
Holger Rune, the seventh seed, advanced as 2024 finalist Frances Tiafoe retired due to lower back pain, with Rune up 6-4, 3-1. Rune's last defeat of a top 20 opponent was in the Barcelona final in April. This victory marked Rune's first time defeating a top 20 opponent since the Barcelona final. Rune also secured his 100th career hard-court win in the tournament.
A notable moment came when Tiafoe, who was treated for his back problem during the match, walked off court dejectedly, carrying only a pair of shoes while an official took away his tennis bag.
The third seed in men's singles, Zverev, is set for a later fourth-round encounter against Toronto finalist Karen Khachanov. The women's quarterfinals are yet to be determined, with Swiatek reaching a third straight quarter-final in the US Open tuneup event.
