Overnight A643 roadworks near Mainz to ease rush-hour congestion

A section of the A643 motorway near Mainz will undergo overnight roadworks next March. The project focuses on extending an acceleration lane at the Mainz-Gonsenheim junction. Drivers should expect lane closures and diversions during the work.

The work is scheduled for Thursday, 12 March 2026, starting at 9 PM and finishing by 5 AM the next day. Crews will extend the acceleration lane onto the A643 by roughly 300 metres. Officials say this should help reduce congestion, especially during busy commuting times.

Preparations will begin earlier, with one lane closing between the Mainz-Gonsenheim and Mainz-Mombach junctions from 7 PM. Diversion routes will guide drivers around the affected area. Those coming from the A63 will be redirected onto the A60 toward Darmstadt. Motorists travelling from the A60 or A643 toward Wiesbaden will take a longer route. They will follow the A60, then switch to the A671 before reaching the Schierstein junction.

The overnight closure aims to improve traffic flow at a key junction. All work is expected to finish by early Friday morning. Drivers are advised to plan extra time or use alternative routes during the roadworks.
