Overflowing waters in Southern Rhine-Westphalia
Heavy thunderstorms wreaked havoc in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous state, over the weekend, specifically in the southern regions. The towns of Herrig and neighboring districts, including Euskirchen and Rhein-Erft, experienced flooded streets and basements on Saturday. Authorities have not reported any injuries, but the former town of Herrig, home to about 500 residents, faced substantial flooding with water reaching half a meter high, leading to power outages, according to local police.
In Euskirchen, the police reported relatively minor incidents, with a few streets and basements being affected by water.
The German Weather Service (DWD) had earlier issued a warning ahead of these severe storms, particularly for the south of NRW, predicting intense rainfall, potential gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour, and hail, with areas receiving up to 40 liters per square meter in a short span of time. The DWD also forecasted the storms to persist into the night of the 31st of May–1st of June, 2025.
These storms have brought significant disruptions to various parts of North Rhine-Westphalia. For instance, an open-air music festival in Hückelhoven had to be cancelled due to the escalating conditions, as heavy rainfall, hail, and strong winds caused extensive damage13. Emergency services have been actively responding to the situations, such as evacuating a train after lightning struck an overhead line, stranding approximately 160 people who were forced to walk across the tracks1. Hailstones as big as ping-pong balls were also reported, resulting in at least eleven minor injuries at the festival.
Clean-up and rescue operations continue across the affected areas in the aftermath of the severe weather, with ongoing concerns about further disruptions as stormy conditions persist.
