Overflowing waters in a well-known Russian tourist destination
In the heart of Russia, the Krasnodar region is currently grappling with a crisis as heavy rainfall triggers flash floods and widespread flooding. As of early August 2025, over 70 residential areas, including Defanovka, Moldavanovka, Novomikhailovsky, Lermontovo, and others, have been affected, with at least 34 homes submerged underwater.
The regional crisis center has been actively involved in the rescue operations, coordinating evacuations and setting up temporary accommodation centers. Emergency services, including fire departments and rescue teams, have deployed over 150 personnel and multiple equipment units to manage the flood consequences.
The heavy rainfall has not only caused flooding but also triggered landslides and a tornado in some areas. Key infrastructure, such as a bridge in Tuapse, has collapsed under the water pressure. The municipality of Tuapse, particularly tourist towns like Goryachy Klyuch, have been significantly affected.
Authorities have issued storm warnings for the Kuban region, expecting river and waterway levels to rise throughout August 4. Veniamin Kondratyev, the governor of the Tuapse district, has declared a state of emergency due to this situation.
The flooding and landslides have disrupted tourism in southern Russia, with roads affected by mudslides and flooding. Travelers have been advised to exercise caution around rivers, seas, and mountain slopes. Relief work and water distribution are ongoing in the affected areas.
Rescue teams have been working tirelessly to save lives, with reports of 25 people being saved from a bus that fell off a bridge. In the village of Lermontovo, a dilapidated bridge was washed away. Despite these efforts, several people are still reported missing.
The situation remains critical, with continuing heavy precipitation raising concerns about further flooding and landslides in the coming days.
