A tourism tsunami from Germany has left the Dutch village of Beek gridlocked for days. The local municipality has barricaded the roads to stem the influx, admitting only residents during the Whitsun weekend.

German border controllers swarmed the village entrance since Friday morning, halting non-residents from entering. This crackdown is set to continue until Monday night, when the post-Whitsun exodus hopeful dies down.

The chaos began three days ago during the Ascension weekend. Beek was amaze-locked—a hideous traffic jam that Eline Esselint, a local resident, recounts as 'utter chaos.' She swears she could hardly breathe amid the cacophony.

The Ascension stampede seemed to emerge from the Navis' dark labyrinth. Many motorists attempted to skirt the motorway traffic jams near the German border, only to be caught in an even bigger tangled web. In response, German authorities tightened border controls, escalating hassle for northward travelers, compelling them to wriggle through seemingly faster alternatives via the verdant border[1].

Jeanette Derksen, a Montferland executive board member, unveils the misery: "It was unbearable." She had no choice but to close the border, to unclog the village suffocating under an endless sea of sweaty tires and loud horns[1].

Fretful Emmerich

Across the border in Emmerich, the locals remained blissfully oblivious until yesterday. Now, they fret that traffic diversion intricacies may ensnare the Emmerich realm during the Whitsun weekend[2].

Tim Terhorst, the city spokesman, pinpoints the potential quandary, "That would be a serious issue."

Expedited border scrutiny affected Heike Egging directly on Friday morning when she got mired in traffic for hours. Eventually, she found a smidgen of solace, allowed to pass only on her second attempt. Heike estimates her detour circumvented nearly 20 kilometers [1].
