Overdue construction of sports hall hits gym: Pressure mounts for accelerated completion - "Faster completion, the better!"

The sports hall at Max-Planck-Gymnasium in Munich has been closed since August 2024 due to water damage, and the school is urgently dependent on its use for physical education. The school's principal, Ulrich Ebert, has expressed concern over the delay in the renovation process, which was initially expected to be completed by September 16, 2022.

The district committee Pasing-Obermenzing has demanded the swiftest possible elimination of the damages at the sports hall and has forwarded the request to the Department of Education and Sports (RBS) and the Building Department to expedite the renovation process. Local politicians have also pledged their support and have urged the departments to act quickly.

The committee has emphasised the importance of accelerating the renovation of the sports hall and has called for more reliable and faster communication with Max-Planck-Gymnasium and other affected schools in the future. The principal, Mr. Ebert, finds it questionable why the repair is taking a year, and he states that every day earlier in the renovation process helps.

However, the work is now expected to last until January 2026. The committee has also demanded that the city provide information about the authority responsible in Munich for the fastest possible repair process of the damaged Fischer-von-Erlach-Sporthall.

The school has been making do with alternative spaces, but the Fischer-von-Erlach sports hall is indispensable due to lack of options. Construction of a third sports hall on Max-Planck-Gymnasium's grounds will take at least two more years. The further wait until the beginning of next year is not bearable for the school.

The district committee has also requested that the city provide a more reliable timeline for the renovation process in the future to avoid similar situations in the future. The school and the community are hoping for a swift resolution to this issue.
