Over Three Million Individuals Attend Kiel Week Event - Over three million individuals have paid a visit to the city of Kiel.

For the sailors, a stormy voyage, for the partygoers, sun-soaked celebrations, and for the authorities, an increased focus on security — Kiel's annual festival, the Kieler Woche, attracted around 3.3 million visitors this year, a slight decrease from the 3.5 million attendees last year due to two rainy days at the start of the week.

Mayor of Kiel, Ulf Kaempfer (SPD), expressed that the event remains a welcoming space for everyone, regardless of age, origin, or financial status. Chief of Kieler Woche, Philipp Dornberger, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the festivities continue to embrace an open-door policy for all.

With the city of Kiel aiming to host sailing competitions once more should Germany place a bid for the Olympic Games, Kiel-Schilksee welcomed roughly 100,000 people to the regatta village. The area boasted world championships, as well as the inaugural Sailing Grand Slam, further cementing the city's readiness for another Olympics in Schilksee.

As Germany actively explores future Olympic bids, with Kiel playing a pivotal role as a sailing venue, Kaempfer expressed optimism about the preparation for an upcoming referendum on Olympic participation.

This year, sailors from 65 nations, equipped with 1,500 boats in 29 classes, kicked off the competition. With more than 350 starts across 14 regatta courses, nearly 90 percent of the races were initiated despite challenging sailing conditions.

Security was a priority during the festival, with a significantly increased police presence. Kiel's Police Chief Mathias Engelmann stated that the week was a safe Kieler Woche, with the police's firm stance clearly evident. The number of offenses was considerably lower compared to the previous year, at 171 incidents by Sunday morning (216 incidents in 2024).

The event culminated under clear skies on June 21, with an impressive windjammer parade drawing around 170,000 spectators. Maritime marvels and traditional fireworks lit up the nights, providing a fitting close to Kieler Woche.

Enrichment Insights:

  • The potential for Germany, and specifically Kiel, to host the Olympic Games in the future is a significant consideration. Four German bidders have submitted rough concepts for future Olympic bids, including the years 2036, 2040, and 2044, with Kiel-Schilksee favored as a sailing venue by some bidding groups, notably Hamburg's. While there is no explicit current bid for the 2026 Olympic Games, Kiel remains a key location in proposed plans for hosting sailing events if Germany wins the rights to host the Olympic Games. The city's sailing venue, Kiel-Schilksee, is highly regarded and supported within German Olympic bid discussions, especially as a sailing location for future Olympic Games rather than the 2026 edition.

The Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, as the sailors from 65 nations competed with 1,500 boats in 29 classes at Kieler Woche 2025, a year that saw a safe and successful event with an increased police presence, amidst the city's aims to host sailing competitions once more should Germany place a bid for the Olympic Games. Meanwhile, amidst the sun-soaked celebrations and sun-soaked sports festivities, millions of partygoers and sailing enthusiasts enjoyed the Kieler Woche, with exhilarating regatta races and the inaugural Sailing Grand Slam in Schilksee.
