Over the course of six months, more than six thousand individuals have been apprehended during Operation Northern Frontier.

Operation Northern Border, a significant multi-agency initiative led by the Mexican government, is underway to combat drug trafficking and weapons smuggling along the northern border regions. The operation, which has been ongoing since February 5 this year, involves coordinated efforts by military, police, and security forces to interdict cartel activities and prevent drug and weapon flows.

The focus of Operation Northern Border is on key areas including Sinaloa, Navolato, General Plutarco Elias Calles in Sonora, and San Luis Rio Colorado. These regions are strategically important due to their role as drug trafficking and weapons smuggling corridors.

In General Plutarco Elias Calles, Sonora, an area used for the manufacture of synthetic drugs was located and disabled. Over 600 liters of substances for the elaboration of methamphetamine, one organic synthesis reactor, and one condenser were seized, with an estimated economic impact on organized crime of 12 million pesos.

In addition, numerous seizures have been made across the targeted regions. In San Luis Rio Colorado, a man was captured, along with two short weapons, four magazines, 70 cartridges of different calibers, and one vehicle. In Navolato, four long weapons, four magazines, seven tactical vests, and 400 cartridges were seized.

The operation has resulted in the seizure of a staggering 59.6 tons of drugs, including 311.89 kilograms of fentanyl. Over 869,000 cartridges of various calibers were also seized, and a total of 5,490 firearms were confiscated. Furthermore, 24,320 magazines and 794 properties were seized.

These actions were carried out in strict adherence to the rule of law and with respect for human rights.

The operation has targeted major drug cartels responsible for fentanyl and other illicit drugs entering the United States, resulting in significant seizures and arrests. For instance, a large operation involving 988 military and police personnel led to the transfer of 26 high-profile drug traffickers to U.S. custody to reduce cartel influence inside Mexican prisons.

Cooperation with the U.S. has intensified as part of Operation Northern Border. This includes military training support and enhanced border surveillance. The ongoing status of the operation reflects increased cooperation between Mexico and the U.S., including intelligence sharing and joint surveillance operations such as drone operations.

Mexico’s current government, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, continues to balance internal security efforts and external diplomatic pressure from the U.S., especially the Biden and previous Trump administrations, which have both insisted on stricter border enforcement and cartel dismantling efforts to stem the fentanyl crisis.

In Elota, Sinaloa, a man was detained, and numerous items were seized, including two long weapons, 16 magazines, 1,231 cartridges, three linked belts, tactical gear, two ballistic plates, and two vehicles (one reported stolen).

The FGR is currently investigating the circumstances related to the Maya Train, following a statement from its Director, who expressed a determination to avoid past failures, stating, "We failed twice before, but we must not do so in the future."

In summary, Operation Northern Border is a major multi-agency Mexican security campaign targeting drug and weapons trafficking across the northern border, specifically in Sinaloa, Navolato, and Sonora regions. The initiative addresses the growing fentanyl crisis and related threats by focusing on critical cartel strongholds and trafficking corridors, reflecting ongoing strategic collaboration between Mexico and the U.S. against organized crime.
