Tit for Tatar: A Look into Canadians' and Americans' Views on the Israeli-Pal Gaz Conflict

Over forty percent of Canadian respondents indicate their belief that Israel is perpetrating a genocide within Gaza.

Let's get real, folks. A recent poll conducted by the Leger firm shows an intriguing split among Canadians and Americans regarding Israel's actions in Gaza Strip. So buckle up as we dive into the nitty-gritty.

This survey was carried out between June 6th and 8th, questioning 1,511 Canadians and 1,011 Americans. Although the poll doesn't assign a margin of error (free as a bird, like us), it's still a juicy insight into public opinion.

The topic of discussion? Whether or not Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

But let's get one thing straight—we're not quoting gods or prophets here. The UN declared genocide an international crime back in 1946, defining it as actions intended to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. This can include killing members, causing serious injury, and more horrific deeds.

So, what does the poll reveal? Almost half of the Canadian respondents (49%) said they agree that Israel is committing genocide, with 23% strongly agreeing and 26% somewhat agreeing. On the flip side, 21% disagreed, with 10% somewhat disagreeing and 11% strongly disagreeing. The rest either didn't know or refused to answer (30%).

As for political leanings, Conservative supporters were the least likely to believe Israel is committing genocide, while more than 60% of Liberal, NDP, Green Party, and Bloc Québécois supporters said they agreed with the statement.

The poll drops just days before Canada decided to take action against Israeli cabinet ministers they accuse of inciting violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. Five countries, including Canada, announced sanctions against Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who were accused of calling for the displacement of Palestinians and the expansion of Israeli settlements.

More recently, world leaders like Prime Minister Mark Carney, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and French President Emmanuel Macron have spoken out against Israeli military operations in Gaza, calling the situation "intolerable." The trio threatened concrete actions if the Israeli government didn't cease its military actions and allow food aid into Gaza.

How about the good ole' United States of A? Well, 38% of Americans polled said they agree Israel is committing genocide, while 26% said they disagree. Naturally, Democrats and younger Americans were more likely to call the situation in Gaza a genocide.

And guess what—a staggering 54% of Canadians and 54% of American respondents said they don't follow news about the Middle East or the current conflict in Gaza. Despite this, 49% of Canadians and 54% of American respondents said they feel they have a good understanding of the conflict in Gaza. Certainly curious, right?

Could there ever be a peaceful resolution to this long-standing conflict? Canadians were less optimistic, with 41% saying no while 28% said yes. Americans were more evenly split, with 33% saying they think peace can be achieved.

So, there you have it—a candid and unfiltered glimpse into the views of Canadians and Americans on Israel's actions in Gaza. Just remember, opinions are like noses—everyone's got one!

  1. Despite the UN's declaration of genocide as an international crime, a recent Leger poll shows that almost half of the Canadian respondents believe Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
  2. Interestingly, opinions on this matter differ significantly based on political leanings, with Conservative supporters being the least likely to agree with the statement.
  3. Amidst this controversial debate, Canada recently announced sanctions against Israeli cabinet ministers accused of inciting violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.
  4. World leaders, such as Prime Minister Mark Carney, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and French President Emmanuel Macron, have spoken out against Israeli military operations in Gaza, considering the situation to be "intolerable."
  5. Despite a vast number of respondents (54% of Canadians and 54% of Americans) claiming to have a good understanding of the conflict in Gaza, a significant 54% of both Canadians and Americans admitted to not following news about the Middle East or the current conflict in Gaza.
  6. The poll also revealed that 38% of Americans polled agree that Israel is committing genocide, duplicating the percentage of Canadians holding a similar opinion.
  7. On the topic of peacemaking, Canadians were less optimistic, with 41% saying no, while Americans were more evenly split, with 33% expressing optimism for a peaceful resolution to the long-standing conflict.
