Over a dozen lives lost, flood disaster in the USA, with an unknown number of children unaccounted for.

Central Texas and the Hill Country region are reeling from a devastating flood that struck on July 4, 2025. The Guadalupe River rose dramatically following heavy rainstorms, reaching near-historic levels and surpassing previous records from 1987.

The floods, which occurred at night, caught many officials and residents off guard. As of July 6, 2025, the confirmed death toll stands at **at least 59**, with dozens more still missing, including **27 young girls from Camp Mystic**, a Christian summer camp in the area.

Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick initially spoke of six to ten potential fatalities, but the situation escalated quickly. Sheriff Larry L. Leitha of Kerr County later announced 13 fatalities due to the flooding, and the governor's office confirmed that the deceased are a result of the flooding in Texas.

The flooding extended across several counties, including Kerr, Burnet, Williamson, Travis, and Bear counties, prompting ongoing flash flood emergencies and disaster declarations by the Texas Governor. Officials have noted challenges such as lack of an effective local river warning system and difficulties in issuing timely evacuations, despite the area's frequent flooding history.

The National Weather Service had issued flash flood warnings and watches as heavy rainfall—up to 12 inches in some spots—fell rapidly over less than 24 hours. Many Americans were affected by the flooding, as the escalation occurred during a time when many typically use extended weekends, including Independence Day on Friday, for trips.

The tragedy has hit hard in areas popular for summer camps, including the affected region. The flooding has caused significant damage to Camp Mystic, a longstanding retreat center for Texas girls. The search for the missing children continues as rescue and recovery efforts proceed.

The scale of destruction is immense and continues to unfold as rescue and recovery efforts proceed. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and those still missing.
