The Petitions Committee of Thuringia's State Parliament tackled a colossal number of 551 petition cases in the past year. As per the 2024 report, presented by committee chairwoman Nadine Hoffmann (AfD) to the deputy president of the state parliament, Steffen Quasebarth, approximately half of the concerns were addressed, while in about 4% of cases, no aid could be provided.
The range of issues varied significantly, as Hoffmann noted, addressing matters from wastewater management to the health of our democracy, wind energy areas, accessible public transportation, and more. In the domain of migration, justice, and consumer protection, a total of 95 petitions were filed, with 62 of them targeting the penal system.
The escalating issues concerning forests and farmer protests were the main backbone for the spike in petitions. A total of 60 petitions and concerns were raised within the infrastructure and forestry sector, according to Hoffmann—an increase of 100% compared to 2023, she added. This rise can be attributed to the turmoil in forest protection and farmers' unrest in the previous year. On the flip side, it has been noticed that the overall volume of petitions has been on a downward trend in recent years. In 2023, the Petitions Committee addressed over 600 petitions.
Last year shattered records for a single public petition with a staggering nearly 64,000 signatures, aiming to save pharmacies.
Steffen Quasebarth, the deputy president of the state parliament, commended the committee's work, consisting of twelve members. The right to petition, Quasebarth declared, is an indispensable component of a thriving democracy.
