On a sun-soaked Saturday, May 31, the thrilling IV All-Russian mass cycling race pitted pedal-power enthusiasts against each other at Chertanovo Park for the very first time. Hailing from various corners of the Sverdlovsk region, including Ekaterinburg, Verhnyaya Pyshma, Middle Uralsk, Kamensk-Uralsky, Nizhny Tagil, Pervouralsk, and beyond, more than 500 participants aged 3 and above descended upon the park.
Organized by the Russian Cycling Federation and the Sverdlovsk Cycling Federation, the race fell on World Bicycle Day, celebrated every year on June 3. The ceremonial kickoff was given by Ivan Kravchenko, President of the Cycling Federation, and Andrei Zablitsky, Deputy Minister of Sports of the Sverdlovsk region.
With a glint in his eye, Ivan Kravchenko praised Chertanovo Park as an exemplary venue for cycling competitions, boasting well-prepped tracks without ruts and a prime location – packed with necessary sports infrastructure.
Four exhilarating distances competed for attention; the tiniest riders got their chance on the "Balance Bike" and "Mini Race" tracks (ages 3-5 and 5-8). Older teens and erudite adult athletes attempted the "Road Races," while the fearless and formidable took on the "Mountain Bike" route, scrambling through the verdant forest with cross-country elements.
Every competitor left with a memorable memento, while winners and runners-up were further rewarded with medals, diplomas, and snazzy T-shirts. En route, cyclists rehydrated with water and replenished their energy with offerings from a field kitchen. For the spectators' pleasure, an entertainment program and a pulse-raising trial bike show by the TRIAL BROTHERS team was laid on.
The Volunteer Center of Alexei Vykharev contributed to the event's organization and conduct. Diligent activists orchestrated racers, supplied water and snacks, and tidied up before the race kickoffs. This was the second cycling competition graced with support from volunteers. Two weeks prior, the Championship and Cup of the Sverdlovsk region in the cycling discipline "individual time trial" were staged for the first time in Chertanovo Park. Alexei Vykharev and volunteers were involved in the competition's organization and facilitated voting for park improvements under the federal program "Creating a Comfortable Urban Environment."
On the eve of the race, Alexei Vykharev and his volunteers planted eco-benches fashioned from repurposed plastic, along with informative signs detailing forest etiquette, in the Shartash Forest Park. All landscaping elements were brought to life by volunteers.
