Over 450,000 Palestinians have evacuated Gaza City since August
In the troubled region of Gaza City and its surroundings, the United Nations estimates the population to reach approximately one million people by the end of August. This estimate comes amidst a worsening crisis that has prompted international aid organizations to take action.
Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe, a humanitarian organisation, has been actively involved in the aid efforts for refugees in the Gaza Strip. They have sought local partners to address the pressing needs of the region. UNICEF, meanwhile, has been providing essential goods, psychosocial support, and child protection to millions of people, including children.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), supported by Israel and the USA, has been operating distribution centers for aid within Gaza. Furthermore, the German government, in cooperation with Jordan, and with support from France and the UK, has announced plans for an international airbridge for aid.
However, the situation remains dire. The UN estimates that around two million besieged Palestinians have been repeatedly displaced since the start of the war in Gaza, almost two years ago.
The international community has shown its concern, with the majority of UN Security Council members supporting a proposal for a ceasefire and humanitarian access to Gaza. Yet, the Israeli offensive in Gaza City continues to earn severe international condemnation.
Paris has called on Israel to "end this destructive campaign," while London dubbed Israel's actions "totally irresponsible and terrifying." Today, Israeli operations in Gaza City killed at least 33 people, including 11 in Gaza City, according to reports from Gaza hospitals.
Civil Defense reported shootings and attacks in Gaza City and Khan Younis. Israeli troops have continued to expand their activities in Gaza City and have found weapons and "neutralized terrorists."
The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has deplored the "morally, politically, and legally intolerable" situation in Gaza. An independent inquiry commission mandated by the UN concluded that Israel was committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. However, Israeli authorities have denied this allegation.
The Israeli army estimates that 480,000 people have fled the area since the recent events. The only remaining route south is now the coastal road of Al-Rashid. Gaza Civil Defense estimates that 450,000 people have left the area.
Residents have described a chaotic situation in Gaza City. Today, the route congested again with people fleeing south on foot, by car, or in carts pulled by donkeys, according to AFP journalists on the scene. The United States again blocked the adoption, by the UN Security Council, of a text calling for a ceasefire and humanitarian access to Gaza.
The situation in Gaza City remains volatile, with the international community urging for a swift resolution to the crisis.
