They're back, baby! The 41st edition of the Short Film Festival Hamburg kicks off this Tuesday under the enticing theme of "Provocation of Love". Over six days, this year's festivities will see the screening of more than 300 short films that delve into the complexities of coexistence, the compelling allure of glitz, the urban jungle, and the cinematic veil surrounding the Sinti and Roma communities, as the organizers have shared.

In a fierce competition, filmmakers will go head-to-head for a combined cash prize of €18,500. Many of the hopefuls are expected to be there in the flesh during the festival week in Hamburg.

Over 5,000 films battled for a place in the competitions

From over 5,000 submissions, 84 films hailing from around 50 countries made the cut for the competitions. The International Competition will serve up a smorgasbord of current aesthetics and fresh narratives, while the German Competition will shine the spotlight on the best offerings from Germany's short film and film school scene.

The "Triple Axel" competition will showcase films under three minutes, revolving around the theme "Mission Impossible" this year. It's also the inaugural year for the Kodak Film Award, acknowledging filmmakers who creatively work with analog film.

The children and youth program "Mo&Friese" won't be left out either, featuring 61 short films, 38 of which are in competition.

A triumphant Verdi survey for the festival

In February, the Short Film Festival Hamburg scored a big win, being recognized as the fairest film festival in Germany by the Verdi union. The festival's team members, both permanent and freelance, raved about the positive work environment, as well as their satisfaction with equality, leadership, compensation, and co-determination, according to a confidential survey.

The Short Film Festival has been a mainstay on the Elbe for over four decades.
