Over 3,000 civilians lost their lives in the ongoing Sudan conflict during the initial six months of 2025, according to UN reports.
In Sudan, a cholera outbreak adds to the ongoing crisis as the country grapples with the aftermath of months of conflict. The United Nations has reported at least 3,384 civilian deaths in Sudan between January 1 and June 30, 2024, amid ongoing clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The actual number of deaths is likely higher than the reported figures, with outside of direct conflict, at least 990 civilians unlawfully killed. Incidents of unlawful killings tripled between February and April, according to reports. Moreover, 70% of the documented casualties resulted from attacks on densely populated areas.
The fighting has caused severe damage to Sudan's infrastructure, health, education, and economy. As of May 20, 2024, Sudan's army has regained control of the capital Khartoum, while the RSF has shifted their operations westward.
The ongoing conflict has displaced over 11 million people internally and forced nearly 4 million to seek refuge in neighbouring countries since April 15, 2023. Approximately 24.6 million people in Sudan face acute food insecurity, and 19 million lack access to safe water and sanitation.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has called the conflict in Sudan a 'forgotten war' and urged immediate action to end the violence, ensure accountability, and provide unimpeded humanitarian aid. The High Commissioner's report, presented during the weekly press briefing at the U.N. Office in Geneva, highlights the deepening humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
Most civilian deaths occurred in Darfur, Kordofan, and Khartoum, accounting for approximately 80% of all documented fatalities in 2024. The report by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, authored by Max Lucks, discusses humanitarian and political issues concerning conflict regions including Sudan.
The conflict in Sudan is contributing to a deepening humanitarian crisis, with the World Health Organization reporting a cholera outbreak in the country. The ongoing crisis requires immediate attention and action from the international community to alleviate the suffering of millions of people in Sudan.
