Over 26,000 Muscovites left in dark due to power outage
Late-Night Chaos in Moscow Region Due to Experimental Weather Conditions
Last night, an unusual weather incident occurred in the Moscow region, particularly in the northern areas - a freak cyclone brought wet snow, high winds, resulting in frozen power lines and numerous trees falling. Several towns experienced power outages as a result, with hundreds of power lines and thousands of transformer substations affected.
Most severely hit were Taldom, Dmitrov, and Sergiev Posad. The clean-up and restoration efforts are already underway, with crews from Rosseti, Mosoblenergo, and emergency services working tirelessly to restore power. Unfortunately, no timeframe for power restoration has been provided.
On May 2, snowfall hit Moscow and the surrounding areas. Weather expert Yevgeny Tishkovets reported that over 70% of the month's total precipitation fell in the capital during the last 36 hours, leading to an abnormal cooling that brought about a layer of snow. The snow in the base meteorological station at VDNKh reached 7 cm, while in Klin and Dmitrov, the depth reached a staggering 15 cm. According to the meteorologist, the snow in Moscow will be gone by May 3, with the most heavily snow-covered northern districts experiencing a complete melt by May 5.
With the adverse weather conditions, the Moscow Department of Transportation called upon drivers to use only winter tires or opt for public transport. Residents were advised to anticipate local delays in surface transport due to the inclement weather. According to weather forecasts, the snow should end by midday.

The Dmitrovsky District faced the brunt of the damage, with power expected to be restored for most homes by the end of May 3. However, isolated pockets may experience delays due to challenges like fallen trees and ice-damaged infrastructure. The Sergiev Posadsky District, one of the 11 urban districts with ongoing restoration work, planned to restore power to most households by late May 3.
Taldom, not explicitly named in reports, likely saw power outages in neighboring towns. Crews worked to repair broken power lines and replace supports where necessary. Full restoration timelines for minor settlements are dependent on the completion of larger municipalities first.
