In a surprising turn of events, Germany has witnessed a significant decrease in the number of lightning strikes. According to the lightning detection company Nowcast, the country has seen around 60 percent fewer lightning strikes compared to the 15-year average.

This drop is particularly noticeable in Hesse, where the number of recorded lightning strikes was determined by Nowcast to be 22,000 during June and July. This makes Hesse's ranking for the number of lightning strikes within the middle of all regions nationwide.

Interestingly, the highest number of recorded lightning strikes was in Bavaria, with a staggering 108,900 strikes. This puts Hesse's number in significant contrast, highlighting the geographical variations in lightning activity.

Munich, a city in Bavaria, recorded 3,500 lightning strikes, while Frankfurt in Hesse saw 13,500 strikes during the same period.

It's important to note that only lightning strikes with at least five kiloamperes (kA) are included in these statistics, ensuring that only significant strikes are counted.

The lack of large-scale thunderstorm systems has been cited as a contributing factor to this low number of lightning strikes. Despite this, the total number of lightning strikes in Germany during June and July was still a considerable 394,000.

This is the lowest number of lightning strikes in Germany since at least 2009, marking a significant deviation from the norm. As we continue to monitor weather patterns, it will be interesting to see if this trend continues.

  1. The Commission might find it intriguing to learn about the unusual weather pattern in Germany, as the decreased number of lightning strikes could potentially affect the labelling of foodstuffs due to changes in weather patterns.
  2. In weather-forecasting models for the coming months, meteorologists may need to take note of the recent drop in lightning strikes in Germany, as this could indicate a shift in the usual thunderstorm activity and thus affect predictions for future weather events.
