Over 200 fatalities reported due to flash floods hitting Kashmir and Pakistan regions

In the Pakistani-administered part of Kashmir and northern Pakistan, heavy rainfall and flash floods have caused widespread destruction and loss of life since June 2025. As of mid-August, at least 706 people have lost their lives, and 965 have been injured, with the hardest-hit areas including the Swat Valley and Buner District.

The disaster has affected several districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), such as Swat, Abbottabad, Charsadda, Malakand, Shangla, Lower Dir, and Torghar, as well as parts of Punjab and Sindh provinces. Over 1,600 buildings have been destroyed, including more than 560 fully destroyed homes, and roads have been damaged, causing disruption and displacement.

Rescue efforts have been deployed swiftly, with provincial governments and emergency teams working tirelessly to reach stranded individuals, recover bodies, and provide relief to affected communities. However, the remote location of some affected areas and the ongoing bad weather have hampered these efforts.

In the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir, at least 65 people have tragically lost their lives due to the floods, and around 170 people have been rescued, many of them severely injured. One of the affected areas is the village of Chositi in the Kishtwar district, where the flood swept away temporary kitchen tents while pilgrims were having lunch on Thursday.

The military is assisting in the rescue efforts, working to ensure that all those in need are reached and that relief is provided as quickly as possible. It is feared that the death toll in Chositi may rise.

Flash floods are a common occurrence during the monsoon season in the Himalayan region, which lasts from June to September. The ongoing disaster serves as a grim reminder of the devastating impact these events can have on communities and the importance of preparedness and swift action in response.

  1. The ongoing general-news of flash floods in Kashmir and northern Pakistan, including the Swat Valley and Buner District, have led to a significant number of house accidents due to over 1,600 buildings being destroyed.
  2. Despite the tireless rescue efforts, the remote locations and poor weather conditions have made it difficult to access some affected areas, raising concerns about the potential increase in the number of casualties, such as the predicted rise in the death toll in Chositi village.
