Over 150 aspirants of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) in Kiambu County have endorsed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as their presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election. This decision was made at a meeting held at a Kiambu hotel on Friday, convened by Kiambu county DCP coordinator Sovinger Bibiana. DCP deputy leader Cleophas Malala and secretary general Hezron Obaga attended the meeting.
The endorsement signals the importance of numbers in central Kenya during the elections, according to DCP aspirant Maina Njenga from Limuru. He believes that Gachagua's move into DCP will ensure Mt Kenya has a formidable political vehicle for the elections. DCP deputy leader Cleophas Malala stated that the party will recognize and reward individuals who have been working to popularize the party at the grassroots level.
Malala, however, accused President William Ruto of allegedly working to weaken the DCP by offering money to strong party candidates. DCP youth leader Peter Kinyanjui expressed confidence that the Mt Kenya region will rally behind Gachagua.
