Over 15 individuals apprehended, approximately 500 detained due to communal disturbances in Pune's Yavat region, triggered by a controversial WhatsApp post.

Tensions flared in the village of Yavat, located in Pune's Daund tehsil, following an objectionable WhatsApp post shared by a local resident. This provocative message sparked a series of events that led to clashes between communities, resulting in property damage and arrests on August 1, 2025.

The incident, still under investigation, has left more than 500 individuals with FIRs registered against them, with around 100 identified and 15 arrested, including the youth who posted the controversial message. The accused individuals are facing charges of arson, damage to property, and inciting communal unrest.

The violence led to the vandalization of a bakery, a religious structure, and the destruction of several vehicles. In response, Yavat police imposed a curfew, enforced Section 144 (prohibiting assemblies), and deployed additional forces to maintain order and prevent further incidents.

Authorities are actively investigating the incident, examining the background of the youth who posted the message and any potential links to extremist groups. They continue to search for other suspects involved in the violence.

Political leaders, including Maharashtra's Chief Minister and local MPs, have appealed for peace and warned of strict action against those spreading communal discord. No serious injuries have been reported; however, police used tear gas to control stone-pelting mobs during the clashes.

As the investigation continues, the authorities aim to restore peace and hold the perpetrators accountable. The communal violence in Yavat serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible social media use and the potential consequences of spreading inflammatory content.
