Over 100,000 Russian military casualties in Ukraine revealed by media scrutiny

Rewritten Article:

In an unprecedented revelation, Russian independent news source Mediazona, in partnership with the BBC Russian service, has authenticated the identities of a staggering 104,763 Russian military personnel who have perished in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The latest report from Mediazona spans the turbulent period from February 24, 2022, to April 24, 2025. Since its last update in mid-April, a sobering addition of 2,880 Russian servicemen have been verified as no longer with us.

The list of these fallen heroes has been painstakingly compiled using credible, publicly accessible sources, such as social media posts, local news outlets, and statements from regional authorities.

Given the Russian government's reluctance to disclose casualty statistics, journalists involved in the investigation suspect the true toll to be significantly higher.

Delving into the specifics, the report reveals that the casualty list includes 25,900 volunteers, 16,500 conscripted convicts, 11,900 mobilized troops, and over 4,900 officers.

Mediazona made a poignant move of publicly unveiling this comprehensive list of casualties for the first time, coinciding with the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February.

In a collaborative effort, independent Russian media outlets Meduza and Mediazona previously estimated, in a joint report, that approximately 165,000 Russian troops had succumbed to the harsh realities of war since the commencement of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed on February 15 that Moscow had suffered a devastating 250,000 losses, with 20,000 causalities reported specifically in the battles for Russia's Kursk Oblast.

Russia has, nonetheless, managed to secure gains in eastern Ukraine and the Kursk Oblast at a steep cost. Recently, intensified offensive operations in three Ukrainian oblasts - Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson – have been reported by Ukraine's Southern Defense Forces spokesperson, Vladyslav Voloshyn.

Russia has yet to disclose its casualty figures, though a Defense Ministry official admitted in December that the department received a staggering 48,000 requests to identify missing soldiers.

In an interview with NBC, published on February 16, Zelensky stated that over 46,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and 380,000 injured on the battlefield.

As of March 28, Russia has reportedly sustained a total loss of 950,860 troops since the full-scale invasion began. The assessment made by Ukraine's General Staff suggests that the figure likely incorporates those killed, captured, wounded, and missing. This estimate broadly aligns with estimates provided by Western intelligence agencies.
