Over 100,000 media materials have received ratings from the Movie and Television Review Classification Board (MTRCB)

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) in the Philippines has been busy over the past six months, reviewing a vast array of local and foreign films, movie trailers, TV plugs, and publicity materials. According to MTRCB Chairperson and CEO Lala Sotto-Antonio, the board has rated and classified a total of 103,652 materials from January to June 2025.

In line with its aim to promote informed and responsible viewing, the MTRCB has been diligently reviewing 287 local and foreign films, 490 movie trailers, 36,263 TV plugs, and an additional nine publicity materials. The MTRCB staff is noted for performing their duties with integrity, ensuring that the review process is fair and unbiased.

The MTRCB's age-appropriate rating and classification system guides viewers about the suitability of content based on age and sensitivity to themes such as violence, nudity, and language. The system includes categories like General Audience (G), Parental Guidance (PG), Restricted (R), and Not for Public Exhibition (X).

Recent developments and historical context imply that the system includes specific age brackets for the R rating, such as R-13, R-16, and R-18. For instance, the reclassification of the movie "Bliss" to R-18 indicates that the MTRCB uses age-specific restricted ratings to control access to films with mature content.

With the approval of Senate Bill 2805 on June 2, 2025, the MTRCB's scope has expanded to cover not just traditional cinema and television but also streaming platforms. This update mandates classification displays and parental controls for online content, marking a significant shift in how viewership is regulated digitally.

Chairperson Sotto-Antonio praised the dedication and hard work of the MTRCB's board members and staff, reiterating their commitment to protecting viewers, particularly minors. The MTRCB aims to help parents and supervising adults make informed viewing choices, ensuring that younger audiences are shielded from inappropriate content.

The MTRCB's commitment includes using age-appropriate rating and classification to maintain Filipino cultural values and protect viewers amid changing viewing habits and new digital media. The expansion of these ratings to streaming platforms aims to ensure that content is classified and viewers are informed accordingly.

In summary, the MTRCB’s age-appropriate rating system centers on age-restricted categories (G, PG, R-13, R-16, R-18, X) and is now extended to streaming platforms as mandated by the 2025 law, ensuring content is classified and viewers are informed accordingly. The MTRCB remains committed to its role in protecting viewers, particularly minors, and promoting informed and responsible viewing.

The MTRCB has been reviewing 287 local and foreign films among other materials, extending their duties to cover streaming platforms as well. In line with this expansion, the age-appropriate rating and classification system will now apply to videos and movies streamed online.
