On June 7th, the Blade Rowers Indoor Rowing Club hosted an epic transformation of indoor rowing competitions. The Indoor Rowing Team Championship aimed to reinvent the indoor rowing experience.

Indoor rowing often focuses on personal bests and solitary achievements. Our goal was simple: design an event that unites teams, places camaraderie at the forefront, and offers an experience that celebrates every participant, not just the winners.

Blade Rowers believes in a sport for all. they wanted to create something electrifying, participative, and tightly-knit. A team event. A shared journey. Dare to be different.

A total of 10 mixed teams of 4 athletes participated, united by a framework emphasizing individual races within a team context.

British Rowing's Head of Community Chris Farrell was thrilled to witness this event take flight. He raved, "It's been fantastic to see one of our oldest accredited indoor clubs deliver a brand-new indoor rowing event. Newcomers and veterans alike found a place to compete.

"The event shook up the traditional indoor rowing format, delivering an entirely new racing style, focusing on individual time trials but presenting a team-centric scoring system. It created an inclusive event for all – from seasoned pros to beginners.

"Blade Rowers have demonstrated how diverse rowing can be, specifically with indoor events, and how indoor rowing has no bounds, expanding the sport's reach and fostering fresh rowing events, challenges, and competitions to hook even more people.

"I'm excited to see what the future events bring as they work towards welcoming more people to the sport."

So, how did it go down?

Each team member tackled a timed race, randomly selected beforehand. Each competitor started and finished at the same time, giving it their all for max distance.

Only 4 ergometers were used in each race – setting up thrilling head-to-head matchups, where athletes could go head-to-head IRL.

Scoring: 10 points went to the winner, with points decreasing down to 1 for 10th place. Winning a heat also earned an extra point.

After 4 rounds, scores were tallied to set up relays finals.

The top 4 teams advanced to the A Final, the next 3 to the B Final, and the remaining 3 to the C Final – ensuring every team had a final, and everyone participated in the climactic team relay showdown.

The Relay Finale was a spectacular conclusion. Each team of four raced 3000m in a thrilling ‘Le Mans’ style sprint to grab their machine. The race culminated in a heart-pounding final sprint across the finish line. It was loud, intense, and a total blast to watch.

The event welcomed participants from across the nation to join in on the fun. Blade Rowers hosted a range of indoor rowing clubs, coastal rowing teams, local gyms, CrossFit athletes, and previous indoor rowing world champions.

This event proved that indoor rowing can unite us all, transcending backgrounds, abilities, and objectives. Blade Rowers is already visioning expanding the concept into a championship series with multiple events, locations, and chances for rowers to connect beyond the screen.

Blade Rowers are changing the game. They're offering more than just workouts and splits. They're cultivating a community. From monthly challenges to technical coaching, to gamified EXR app sessions, they bring a serious but fun, competitive yet inclusive approach to indoor rowing.
