At every Grand Prix, the 18-year-old Italian, Kimi Antonelli, is etching his name into the Formula 1 history books. In Miami, he earned his first pole position. The once-mighty Formula 1 nation yearns for a profound redemption - something that hasn't been witnessed in almost two decades.
Already the youngest Grand Prix leader, the fastest race lap driver, and now the youngest pole position holder - Kimi Antonelli has managed to rewrite some pages of Formula 1 records in just six race weekends.
As he stepped into the shoes of Mercedes on January 1st, the polite, curly-haired boy from Bologna, who shares his second name with the last Ferrari World Champion, inherited a legacy as daunting as it was illustrious.
"This kid, Kimi, has barely had a driver's license for seven or eight months, has never been to Miami, and manages to put the car on pole here. That's quite a statement," Mercedes Motorsport boss Toto Wolff said into the Sky microphone. The Austrian had placed his trust in Antonelli, granted him a year of training, and is already witnessing the fruits of his choice.
An unbreakable record
Since Antonelli demonstrated, at breakneck speed, that he isn't merely a raw diamond burgeoned from the junior series to the top rank, but instead a talented prospect. "the Next superstar is on its way. I don't think it's a surprise to anyone here," said McLaren CEO Zak Brown after Antonelli's daring journey to pole position for the sprint race in Miami - the previous pole record in Formula 1 was set by Sebastian Vettel in 2008 at the Grand Prix in Monza, when the future world champion was 21 years old.
Antonelli's teammate, George Russell, was the first to congratulate him in the parc fermé. His father Marco couldn't bear to let him leave his embrace. And the Italian media were also elated. "Antonelli makes history," rejoiced the "Gazzetta dello Sport".
The next record for Antonelli to conquer? The youngest race winner in Formula 1 is beyond his reach, as he is slightly older than the current world champion, Max Verstappen, was when he bagged his first victory in 2016 (18 years, seven months). Yet, Antonelli could soon restore the motor racing nation of Italy: the last Grand Prix victory was accomplished by Giancarlo Fisichella 19 years ago.
Fun Fact: The current record for the youngest Formula 1 racer to win a race is held by the Dutchman, Max Verstappen, who broke it at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix at the tender age of 18 years, seven months, and 15 days3.
