Outsiders criticized for inserting politics into Kg Sungai Baru, triggering September 11 uproar, according to Johari

In a podcast hosted by TV3 tonight, Plantation and Commodities Minister Johari outlined his concerns regarding the Urban Renewal Bill and the ongoing issues at Kampung Sungai Baru.

Johari emphasized the need for the Bill to address situations where there are no buyers for the units in redevelopment projects. He felt that the issue was being politicized and those unfamiliar with the matter were being misled.

The incident at Kampung Sungai Baru, which occurred on Sept 11, served as a lesson for those working on the Urban Renewal Bill, according to Johari. On that day, a stand-off occurred over the eviction of residents. The Dang Wangi police chief, Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman, was injured during the incident.

Three people were arrested to assist in the investigation following the incident. Johari's officers found many involved in the stand-off were outsiders.

Johari also highlighted the importance of ensuring appointed developers have credible financial standings to complete passport renewal projects. He mentioned his concern about scenarios where appointed developers go bankrupt or shut down businesses during redevelopment projects.

The proposed Urban Renewal Bill has been deferred to the next parliamentary sitting. Johari stated that many residents who moved more than seven years ago are still waiting for housing units that have not materialized. If construction of the units begins in the eighth year, residents would still have to wait another five years. This means they would get nothing in 13 years. Johari mentioned that 40% of these residents have already passed away.

Johari advised caution in appointing developers for redevelopment projects to prevent similar issues as Kampung Sungai Baru. He also emphasized that the Bill should clearly outline the government's role in redevelopment projects.

However, Johari's concerns extend beyond Kampung Sungai Baru. He mentioned that outsiders were politicizing the issue. He also pointed out that the search results do not provide information about which person or organization takes responsibility for urban renewal rebuild projects if the appointed developers go bankrupt or close their business.

In conclusion, Johari's address underscores the need for careful consideration and transparency in the Urban Renewal Bill to ensure the welfare of those affected by redevelopment projects and to prevent future incidents like the one at Kampung Sungai Baru.
