Outdoor theater venues pin hopes on a late surge after an only partially dry spell of weather - Outdoor stages mark the climactic end to a damp seasonal span
In the picturesque landscape of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, open-air theaters are preparing for an influx of tourists as the summer season continues. The German Weather Service (DWD) has predicted sunshine and temperatures up to 30 degrees for the coming days, which bodes well for these cultural hotspots [1].
The region's open-air theaters, including the Pirate Open-Air in Grevesmühlen and the Stoertebeker Festival on Rügen, are hoping to attract visitors who have spent their days at the beach in the evening [2]. However, July's weather may have had an impact on the initial tourist turnout. The month was unusually wet, with 18 days of rain and weather extremes affecting the open-air theaters [3].
Despite this, the open-air events are carrying on. The Bodden Concert Series is continuing into late August, and open-air theater seasons are running through to October, such as "Walang Aray" from late August to mid-October [4]. This suggests that the season is proceeding without systemic cancellations or interruptions publicly noted.
Peter Venzmer, artistic director of the Pirate Open-Air, remains optimistic about tourist turnout. Advance bookers have already come to the theater, and he hopes to reach last year's result for the second half of the season [5]. However, the weather may have deterred some potential visitors to the Stoertebeker Festival, which is the largest open-air theater in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern [6].
Nicole Düwell, who organizes the Müritz-Saga, has expressed a desire to "get back on track" in the remaining season, after a performance had to be canceled due to heavy rain at the end of July [7]. Despite the setback, Düwell and other organizers remain hopeful for a successful season.
Anna-Theresa Hick, the managing director of the Stoertebeker Festival, shares this optimism. She hopes for many more visitors until the last performance on September 13 [8]. As the weather forecast suggests warm and sunny days ahead, the open-air theaters are gearing up for a busy season, eagerly awaiting tourists from near and far.
