"HafenSport Rostock turns an idle corner of the city harbor into a hub for action, connection, and positive vibes," asserts Johannes Wolff, Head of Smart City Rostock. Open to all ages, this outdoor sports facility boasts stunning views of the water. "No registrations, no barriers — just folks looking to get active," Wolff explains.
Transforming the City Harbor: A Multifunctional Sports Haven
"We've crafted a versatile sports complex with a tech twist that's one-of-a-kind," shares Dennis Pelikan, Chairman of StraßenSport Rostock, who designed the facility. This innovation has rejuvenated the city harbor.
The HafenSport project, valued around €200,000, is part of the federal funding program "Model Projects Smart Cities." "In Rostock, the notion of a smart, livable city materializes in public spaces: collaborating digital possibilities with physical activity, creating a zone where technology sensibly complements daily activities," Wolff says. As of June 28, a sports app was launched for convenient access to equipment.
Inclusive Gear for All
HafenSport offers various sports apparatus, including a basketball court, training equipment, a vibrant container for securely storing equipment, and an app-controlled digital sports box stacked with jump ropes, balls, and weights.
A waterfront seating area provides a welcoming spot for rest, relaxation, and socializing.
A Tech-Savvy Storage System
Using the HafenSportbox app, users can borrow equipment effortlessly, even outside business hours. After registering their phone number, they obtain a code that unlocks the designated compartment inside the sports box locker system. "There's nothing to worry about theft," insists Wolff. "Every user signs up through the app." Clubs can also store their sports gear on-site after registering.
Preparing for (Virtually) Unavoidable Vandalism
Despite the accessible nature of HafenSport, its potential susceptibility to vandalism hasn't escaped notice. "We've done our best to safeguard the facility using resilient materials for durability," Wolff states. Night-time lighting "eliminates any fears," he adds. Experience shows when the public embraces and maintains such public facilities, vandalism tends to be minimal.
Mayor Eva-Maria Kröger backs this assertion, stating, "Fears of vandalism should not prevent us from implementing bold projects."
HafenSessions: Regular Group Training Sessions
Apart from club sports and individual exercises, StraßenSport invites participants to HafenSessions. Open to all ages and fitness levels, these group training sessions occur twice a week, every Tuesday and Thursday, from 5 to 6:30 PM. "Whether it's Calisthenics, Streetworkout, or enjoying some physical activity together, we welcome everyone!" declares Pelikan.
