In a controversial turn of events, Andreas Büttner, the anti-Semitism commissioner in Brandenburg and a member of the German Left Party, finds himself at the centre of a petition calling for his expulsion from the party. The petition, signed by nine party members, accuses Büttner of violating party resolutions due to his pro-Israel stance and public disagreement with the party's position on the Middle East conflict.

Büttner, who has been vocal about combating attacks on Jews in Brandenburg, has stated that he does not see it as his role to criticize the Israeli government. However, he acknowledges the mistakes made by the Israeli government and supports the party's stance against anti-Semitism.

The crux of the controversy lies in Büttner's public disagreement with the party's resolutions on the Middle East conflict. He has been critical of the party's call for an end to expulsion and famine in Gaza, enforcing international law, and its opposition to recognizing a state of Palestine. Büttner believes that recognizing a state of Palestine would be the worst step one could take.

The Left Party's resolution states that starving the civilian population is a method used by Israel to destroy Palestinian livelihoods. However, Büttner has criticized the party leadership for not meeting with the Central Council of Jews and for not engaging in a dialogue that could foster understanding and peace.

The petition against Büttner also accuses him of supporting Israel against Hamas in Gaza and criticizing the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Israel has accused UNRWA of being infiltrated by the Islamic Hamas, a claim that has not been substantiated.

The anti-Semitism commissioner defends the party's resolutions, stating that they bind the party executive, but not every individual member. He maintains that his role is to combat anti-Semitism, not to take political stances that may be at odds with the party's official position.

Büttner's online presence has not been spared from the fallout. He has faced online abuse, including being called a "child killer" and "genocide denier" on social media. Despite this, Büttner remains steadfast in his belief that dialogue and understanding are key to resolving the complex issues in the Middle East.

This incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance that political parties must maintain between upholding their principles and fostering an environment of open dialogue and diversity of opinion. The future of Büttner's tenure in the Left Party remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the debate over the Middle East conflict and the role of political parties in shaping public opinion continues to be a contentious issue.
