Our school once again forms cycling teams for urban riding
On Your Marks, Get Ready, Ride!
Hamburg's Stadtradeln event kicks off this week with a 17-day cycling challenge, running from June 13 to July 3. Whether you're a lone rider or part of a team, you can track your pedaled miles through a dedicated app. And guess what? Our university is jumping on the bike too!
In just a week, Hamburg's streets are buzzing with cyclists eager to log their kilometers. Whether you're an individual rider or part of a registered team, you've got until July 3 to pile up on the miles. At the end of the challenge, prizes will be dished out for the winners. And yes, our institution is back in the saddle once more! With over 100 active cyclists on our university team, we're aiming high to take the competition by storm!
Keep Pedaling, ADFC Wants You Motivated
In cities across Germany, municipalities pick a three-week window between April and September for residents to digitally log their cycling miles. In Hamburg, over 17,000 teams have signed up and racked up over two million kilometers already.
Kaija Dehnkamp from ADFC Hamburg is thrilled with the numbers so far: "We already have more active participants than last year," she said to our website. The goal is to convince irregular cyclists to hit the streets more frequently during the action period. Dehnkamp hopes that participants will realize that they can reach their destination faster and more comfortably by bike than with other modes of transport.
Health benefits are immediate for cyclists, according to Dehnkamp. The impact on the regular cycling behavior of participants was analyzed in a survey by TU Dresden in 2023. The results show that a substantial 18% of those who participate multiple times end up cycling more frequently in the short term.
Join Our University Team!
As in previous years, we're putting together a team for the Stadtradeln. Andrea Kupke is part of the organizing crew at the university. Currently, 105 active cyclists are part of our team—a mix of students and staff.
At the time of this writing, our university is ranked 25th (June 26 update), a top performance amongst over 1,200 registered teams. Kupke hopes that by facilitating cycling as an attractive option for daily commuting in a city like Hamburg, we can highlight its many benefits. The fact that so many schools, organizations, companies, and associations take part in Stadtradeln underscores the high demand for improved cycling infrastructure.
Infrastructure for All
Dehnkamp refers to the Melde-Michel initiative in this regard. Hamburg residents can submit their infrastructure-related concerns through the website, including issues that may impede cycling.
In addition to the ongoing cycling challenge, exciting events are planned throughout the city. On June 28, the "Fancy Cyclista*Ride" is set to take place to demonstrate support for better cycling infrastructure and a feminist perspective on the mobility transition. Participants are invited to decorate themselves and their bikes with flowers, ribbons, and glitter to make a colorful spectacle on the streets. The finale for the action week is the "Abradeln," an end-of-the-action group ride from the St. Georgs Kirchhof to the Lesecafé in Stadtpark.
Stay tuned for more updates on our cycling journey!
Nike Mosa
Nike Mosa, born in 2003, is a regular at the St. Pauli football stadium but can't resist the lure of Twitch, where she follows young millionaires and millionaire girls streaming their earnings. Despite being born in Regensburg, Nike grew up in Hamburg, where she pursued Journalism in her undergraduate studies. At the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung during her internship, she wondered why gamers on Twitch were spending millions on virtual goods. Her investigation led to an article exploring the phenomenon. Currently, Nike is part of the Social Media team at Tagesschau. Though she's a digital native, she admits she'd rather leave video assistant decisions to referees—they often leave her scratching her head.Kürzel: nim
