Otto: "In galleries and museums, there's not enough laughter" - Otto Waalkes turns Dresden into a canvas of laughter with his quirky art show
Comedian Otto Waalkes is bringing laughter to the art world with his exhibition in Dresden. The show, running until January 3 at the Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski, features around 150 of his works, many starring his comedic character, the Ottifant.
Waalkes, known for his appearances in productions like 'LOL: Last One Laughing', aims to infuse art with more humor. His paintings often parody famous works, with the Ottifant character, born from a failed self-portrait, taking centre stage. One highlight is 'The Ottifant Girl', a playful twist on Jean-Étienne Liotard's 'The Chocolate Girl'.
Waalkes' unique technique involves using tea as a base layer for his canvases, giving them an 'Old Master patina'. He studied the techniques of the Old Masters during his art education at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg in the 1970s.
The exhibition in Dresden offers a rare chance to see Waalkes' artistic side, blending comedy and art in a unique way. With its focus on the Ottifant character and Waalkes' distinctive style, the show promises a humorous and engaging experience for visitors.
