Oscars 2022: Recap of Visual Effects Nominees

In the world of motion picture magic, the 94th Academy Awards are set to honour the best in the industry. Among the nominees for Best Achievement in Visual Effects, we find three films that have benefited from the expertise of Digital Domain: Free Guy, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Meanwhile, another contender, The Tragedy of Macbeth, has seen Mocha Pro as its trusted ally in overcoming rotoscoping challenges. The duo of Michael Huber and Alex Lemko from East Side Effects, who worked on the film, found Mocha Pro "extremely helpful" in generating mattes to place set extensions behind the actors, tackling set extensions, blue screen comps, paintwork, CG water, and CG birds.

One film that has been particularly praised for its visual effects is Dune, directed by Denis Villeneuve. With a whopping 10 nominations, including Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Achievement in Visual Effects, and Best Sound, the team behind the film relied heavily on Mocha Pro for tracking the mesmerizing deep blue Eyes of Ibad, with over 450 shots. Both East Side Effects and Wylie Co., led by CEO and chief creative director Jacob Maymudes and compositing supervisor James Jooyoung Lee, contributed to Dune's visual effects, using Mocha Pro to its full potential.

As for the winners at the 94th Academy Awards, while Dune has been confirmed as the winner for Best Cinematography, the results for the other categories, such as Best Motion Picture of the Year and Best Achievement in Visual Effects, are yet to be announced. For a precise and confirmed list of all winners, the official Academy website or a dedicated Oscar results page would be the best source.

In the realm of rotoscoping, Chris Solon, roto paint lead at Scanline VFX, discusses the use of Silhouette's advanced rotoscoping, paint, and compositing tools on Netflix's Don't Look Up, which is nominated for 4 Oscars, including Best Motion Picture of the Year. Dhiraj Brahma, a roto paint supervisor from India, also shares insights on the biggest VFX challenges on each of the films and how the team uses Mocha Pro and Silhouette to get the job done.

As the 94th Academy Awards approach, with the ceremony airing on Sunday, March 27, at 8 pm EDT/5 pm PDT, the anticipation builds for the winners in each category. Stay tuned to find out who will take home the coveted statuette!
