After his impressive fourth-place finish in the 2025 Tour de France, Scottish rider Oscar Onley is setting his sights on future editions of the prestigious race. At just 22 years old, Onley became the youngest British rider to place in the top 10 and the best-placed British rider since 2022.

Onley's Tour de France journey began with the goal of supporting his team, but he quickly emerged as a genuine GC contender. He held pace with top riders like Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard on key Alpine climbs, securing fourth place with a strong team effort. Despite finishing 12:12 behind Pogačar and narrowly missing the podium by 1:12 to Florian Lipowitz, Onley's performance was a testament to his potential[1][2][3].

Following the 2025 Tour de France, Onley will race in the Tour of Britain, witnessing the retirement of fellow British rider Geraint Thomas. However, Onley's focus remains on the Tour de France, which he considers "so much bigger than every other race"[4]. He aims to return to the race in 2026 to "back up" his results from 2025.

Onley's consistency and calm were particularly impressive during the second and third week of the 2025 Tour de France. He finished fourth on the aggressive stage to Rouen and third on the uphill finish to Mûr-de-Bretagne, demonstrating his versatility and competitive spirit[6][7].

Looking ahead, Onley considers the World Championships in Rwanda as his "real big goal for the end of the season." The race, which will be raced at a similar altitude and includes 5200 metres of altitude gain, presents a significant challenge. However, Onley is confident and eager to take on this challenge[8].

With his breakthrough performance at the 2025 Tour de France, Onley has established himself as a rising star in professional cycling. He is now seen as the potential heir apparent to Geraint Thomas as the best British Tour de France rider for the years to come[9]. As he continues to develop and gain experience, Onley is poised to challenge for the yellow jersey in future editions of the Tour de France.
