"Oscar Onley expresses eagerness to rejoin the Tour de France, aiming to replicate his standout performance"
Oscar Onley's Breakthrough Tour de France Performance Sets Sights on Future Success
Oscar Onley, the 22-year-old Scottish rider, made waves in the cycling world with his impressive fourth-place finish at the 2025 Tour de France. This performance marked a significant leap in Onley's career and established him as a potential future Grand Tour winner.
Onley is currently under contract with UCI WorldTeam Picnic–PostNL until the end of 2026, having signed a five-year deal at the end of 2022. This stability is crucial for his growth, as his team and advisers believe that he needs a stable environment to continue his development without undue pressure from major team changes.
The young rider's career progression has been rapid. He turned professional in 2019 and secured his first pro win on Stage 5 of the 2024 Tour Down Under. In 2024, he placed second overall and won the youth classification at the Tour of Britain. His 2025 Tour de France result—finishing about 12 minutes behind winner Tadej Pogačar—highlighted a significant leap in performance and has established him as a potential future yellow jersey contender.
Onley's consistency and calm were impressive during the 2025 Tour de France. He finished fourth on the aggressive stage to Rouen and third on the uphill finish to Mûr-de-Bretagne. He climbed from 11th after the time trial to seventh and then up to fourth during the second and third week of the race.
Following the Tour de France, Onley will race in the Tour of Britain, followed by a one-day WorldTour race in Canada, and the World Championships in Rwanda. The World Championships are Onley's "real big goal" for the end of the season.
While Onley is unsure if he can repeat his fourth-place finish in the 2026 Tour de France, he is motivated to return to the event to "back up" his results. He aims to at least finish on the podium in future Tour de France events.
Meanwhile, Florian Lipowitz, a German rider, secured third place in the 2025 Tour de France, 40 seconds ahead of Onley. Onley has never done the Giro d'Italia and only participated in one stage of the 2023 Vuelta a España. A logical step for Onley could be targeting the Giro d'Italia or the Vuelta a España before the Tour de France.
Onley is set to share leadership of the Great Britain team with Tom Pidcock in the World Championships. The British team will be without Geraint Thomas, who will retire during the Tour of Britain. The mantle of leadership in Grand Tours is now passing from Thomas to Onley, making him the potential heir apparent.
