Osaka's National Symphony Orchestra honors the legendary piano maestro, Oscar Peterson.

Tailored Text:

Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra rubbed shoulders with the big leagues at the World Expo in Osaka, Japan, on Friday, putting on a dazzling tribute to the late, great Oscar Peterson. This stellar performance honored the legendary Canadian jazz musician on what would have been his 100th birthday, adding another feather to Canada's cap at Expo 2025.

Coordinating the tour, with stops in South Korea, Tokyo, and Expo 2025, was a tricky puzzle—the "Shining Hat" stage is in high demand by all delegations.

The show was a smorgasbord of talents and genres. Pianist Jaeden Izik-Dzurko kicked things off, followed by the Oscar Peterson Centennial Quartet's blend of jazz and classical orchestra. Canada's values of inclusivity shone bright as a Japanese children's choir from El Sistema programs sang along with counterparts from Canada.

Izik-Dzurko's performance was a standout, with crowd favorites like "Etude No. 12" by Marc-Andre Hamelin and "Place St. Henri" by Peterson earning thunderous applause.

Oscar Peterson's connection to Japan dates back to 1953, and the crowd felt every moment of emotion as the concert closed with a stirring rendition of "Hymn to Freedom." The pièce de résistance, however, was the world premiere of Mike Downes' arrangement of Oscar Peterson's "Trail of Dreams: A Canadian Suite."

The suite, inspired by different regions of Canada, was first released on the Telarc label in 1999. The new arrangement, commissioned by the NAC Orchestra, brought more heft to the music, creating a bolder, big-band sound that truly captures the essence of the suite. However, the electric guitar didn’t quite vibe with the orchestra, and simpler pieces like "The Okanagan Valley" might have benefited from a more subtle approach.

Christophe Huss joined the NAC Orchestra for their Asian tour.

Local journalist Anne-Sophie Jahn basically broke down the media coverage of Marie Trintignant's femicide at the hands of Bertrand Cantat.

Dangerous storms, with tornado alerts, are on the horizon for Quebec. Environment Canada has issued warnings for wind, freezing rain, and severe thunderstorms, with videos available for viewing.
