Orkney’s 2025 Island Games Break Records with £4.3M Economic Boost

Orkney has hosted its largest-ever event, welcoming thousands for the 2025 Island Games. The nine-day competition in July drew 1,630 athletes from 24 island communities and injected £4.3 million into the local economy. Organisers described the games as a triumph on every level.

Preparations for the event included a £1.6 million upgrade to Orkney’s sporting facilities. The total cost of staging the games reached £3.6 million, with the island’s 22,000-strong community playing a key role in hosting.

The 2025 Island Games in Orkney proved a major success, both in attendance and economic benefit. Future editions are already planned for the Faroe Islands and the Isle of Man, continuing the tradition of island-based competition.
