Orioles rally late to snap Tigers' eight-game losing streak in doubleheader opener

The Baltimore Orioles staged a late comeback to defeat the Detroit Tigers 5-3 in the first game of a day-night doubleheader. The Tigers, who led for most of the match, suffered their eighth straight loss—their longest slump since June 2023. Detroit started strong, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning after an error by Orioles third baseman Coby Mayo. They extended the advantage to 3-1 by the eighth, with Matt Vierling contributing three hits and Spencer Torkelson adding a run-scoring single.

Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson cut the deficit with a sixth-inning homer off Framber Valdez. Orioles starter Brandon Young allowed two unearned runs and five hits over 6 2/3 innings, keeping his team within reach.

In the ninth, Colton Cowser sealed the win with a three-run homer off Detroit closer Kenley Jansen. Jansen, now with four blown saves in 11 chances this season, struggled again. Meanwhile, Orioles reliever Dietrich Enns efficiently retired four straight batters on just 11 pitches to close out the game. The loss extends Detroit’s skid to eight games, matching their worst run from last June. Baltimore’s late rally, powered by Cowser’s clutch homer, secured the victory in the doubleheader opener.
