Detective Elliot Stabler, played by Christopher Meloni, continues to lead the charge in this darker, more serialized season. In the trailer, we see Stabler accompanied by his son as they delve into the dangerous world of cross-border smuggling and high-tech domestic terrorism.
The season explores a shocking storyline involving Stabler's fate, contributing to a dramatic and emotional narrative arc. In episode 1, titled "Lost Highway", Stabler goes undercover as a big rig driver to expose an international smuggling ring.
Fans will also see the return of Mariska Hargitay, reprising her role as Olivia Benson in some capacity. In episode 2, Stabler recovers from a grievous injury while Captain Benson oversees his recovery and a missing sex worker case.
The Camorra takes center stage in episode 4, with Stabler working with Isabella to reveal who is behind the Camorra before there's an all-out war. The episode is titled "Promesse Infrante".
Two episodes will be released on the debut day, with the second episode titled "Dante's Inferno". The season also features a crime family intent on repaying Stabler for the injury he did them in Rome, as well as an appearance from an SVU captain in a sneak peek video.
Season 5 episode 3 is titled "Paranza Dei Bambini", and in this episode, Stabler contacts an old C.I. from Italy to question the motives of their current ones after an attack on one of Carisi's trials.
In episode 5, titled "Lago D'Averno", Eli's police career ramps up with his first kill on the job, landing him at deeper odds with Stabler and his family. The Camorra begins to fall apart in this episode, forcing its leader to come out of hiding and putting OCCB in direct danger.
One of Mexico's biggest players returns to the streets in season 5 episode 6, titled "Red, White, Black and Blue". Stabler and a friend from the past are pulled through the streets and underground in this episode.
As the season progresses, Stabler has more questions than answers about his own career, adding to the suspense and intrigue. With its characteristic longer-investigation and serialized storytelling style, fans can expect season 5 to keep its focus on Detective Stabler’s personal and professional life.
The show will re-air on NBC starting September 25, 2025, returning the show to network TV as part of a Thursday night Law & Order lineup. This move shows NBC's confidence in the show's ability to attract a broad audience while allowing creative freedom and potentially bigger budgets from streaming.
