Orchestral Concerts See Surge in Public Interest, RPO's Diverse Programming Drives Growth

A recent survey has revealed a significant increase in public interest for orchestral concerts, with 84 percent expressing a desire to experience one. This growth is particularly welcome news for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), which has been working to rebuild public confidence in concerts and grow tomorrow's orchestral audience through diverse programming.

The RPO's new season aims to nurture a journey of discovery in orchestral music, catering to various tastes. While long-standing audience-goers still prefer traditional classical music concerts, with 52 percent favoring them, there's a growing appetite for innovative programming. Notably, 42 percent of those with little knowledge of classical music but interest in it would be drawn to orchestral concerts featuring pop music. The RPO's efforts to combine classical music with popular genres, such as those seen in projects by 2CELLOS, Vitamin String Quartet, and Brooklyn Duo, have gained significant attention on social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube.

The survey also highlighted that 24 percent of respondents were interested in concerts featuring traditional classical music, indicating a strong foundation for the genre. However, the RPO's focus on diversity and innovation is helping to broaden the appeal of orchestral concerts, attracting new audiences and fostering a love for orchestral music among the next generation.

The RPO's new season, with its emphasis on discovery and diversity, is poised to capitalize on the growing interest in orchestral concerts. By offering a mix of traditional classical music and innovative programming, the RPO is not only rebuilding public confidence in concerts but also nurturing tomorrow's orchestral audience.
