Orban Proposes Different Approach for Ukraine-EU Relations
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is not on board with EU accession negotiations with Ukraine. Instead, he suggests discussing a "strategic partnership." Orban expressed his concerns about the unclear consequences of Ukraine's membership in the EU during a radio interview. He advocated for the EU to first establish a strategic partnership with Ukraine before engaging in accession talks.
Orban believes that this partnership would allow for a gradual rapprochement between the EU and Ukraine, given the significant gap between the two entities presently. His comments came after a meeting with EU Council President Charles Michel to prepare for the EU summit in mid-December. The summit discussed further support for Ukraine, which Orban threatened to block, citing Ukrainian rule of law issues that led to the freezing of EU funds.
Following EU circles' announcement of releasing up to ten billion euros from the frozen funds, Orban now appears to be seeking a compromise with his strategic partnership proposal. Despite the EU's general support for Ukraine's integration into the bloc, Orban's stance has raised concerns and skepticism within the EU due to his opposition to military aid for Ukraine and his ongoing ties with Moscow, despite the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Orban's opposition to Ukraine's EU accession negotiations and his preference for a strategic partnership remain a contentious issue among EU members. Some view his stance as undermining efforts to support Ukraine, while others may see value in his proposal for a more gradual approach.
While Orban has not explicitly proposed a "strategic partnership" as an alternative to EU accession negotiations, his comments indicate a shift in strategy focused on negotiations and a peace agreement, which may not align with the EU's current approach to supporting Ukraine's integration and sovereignty. Furthermore, Orban's ongoing ties with the Kremlin and his opposition to military aid for Ukraine have raised concerns within the EU about Hungary's alignment with Russian interests.
