Elena Lasconi Steps Down as USR President Amidst Election Woes

In a surprising turn of events, Elena Lasconi, head honcho of the Save Romania Union (USR), has relinquished her post following a disappointing performance in the preliminary round of the presidential elections.

Lasconi, who'd lost her party's confidence in her presidential bid weeks prior to the polls, managed to garner some 2.68% of the votes. In the November 2024 presidential round, she had 19.17% of the votes, setting the stage for a second round against pro-Russia Călin Georgescu, until the Constitutional Court called off the elections alleging foreign meddling in the process.

"The time has come for a tough decision. I'm resigning from the USR presidency. I believe this is right, natural, and beneficial at this juncture. I resign, knowing I've exhausted every ounce of my effort to make Romania a better place," Lasconi expressed in a public post.

Dominic Fritz, Timișoara's mayor, is set to take on the interim USR presidency.

Behind the Scenes:Lasconi has raised concerns about a political power play within her own party, hinting at a coup-like situation[3] after her Fellow USR members opted to support Dan in the presidential race instead of her, which she viewed as an underhanded move against her by those plotting for power.

This internal power struggle suggests a deep division within the USR party. To continue their efforts towards a better Romania, the party must address this internal conflict and work towards cohesion.
